Okay, so realllyyyy the journey from grapes to wine involves far more than the 14 steps shown here. In reality there are about a million decisions that influence the final wine… but we gotta start somewhere… right? Here we go:

During fermentation, we’re monitoring °Brix, temperature, and fermentation kinetics while tasting regularly and evaluating extraction. Depending on the fermentation, we may adjust punch-down frequency, inoculate for malolactic fermentation, or make other process-specific additions as needed.

After pressing, the wine is transferred to tank or barrel, where it continues to evolve. Throughout aging, barrels are topped to replace the angel’s share, wines are periodically racked off their lees, and each lot is evaluated individually.

Winemakers may choose to blend lots, fine, filter, cold stabilize (when appropriate), or bottle with minimal intervention, depending on the desired style.

No two wineries—or even two wines—are made exactly the same. Every vintage requires hundreds of small decisions, balancing chemistry, microbiology, vineyard expression, and sensory evaluation.

Here’s my take…

I’ve been thinking a lot about how the wine industry approaches Gen Z, and I honestly think we need to expand our idea of who this generation is and what they’re actually looking for.

First, I want to be clear: I have nothing against making wine more approachable. Fun branding, beautiful packaging, memes, emojis, quizzes… they’re all great tools. They lower the barrier to entry and help people discover wine in the first place.

But if we want longevity instead of novelty, loyalty instead of one-time purchases, and genuine passion for wine instead of fleeting trends, then we have to offer something deeper.

Instead of constantly asking, “How do we simplify wine enough for Gen Z?” maybe we should be asking, “How do we become better teachers?”

I think the burden belongs on us as an industry.

We need to communicate more effectively. We need to explain without condescending. We need to be patient while people learn. We need to set our egos aside and remember that everyone starts somewhere.

Wine shouldn’t become less complex just because complexity can be intimidating.

Its complexity is exactly what makes it worth falling in love with.

Wine is one of the few subjects that genuinely connects so many disciplines. Chemistry. Ecology. Agriculture. History. Economics. Geography. Culture. Hospitality. Art. If you study wine, in many ways you study the world.

Why would we assume Gen Z doesn’t want access to that?

More than ever, young people are looking for meaning. They’re looking for hobbies that become identities, communities built around shared interests, dinner clubs, run clubs, book clubs, niche online communities, experiences that make them feel connected to something larger than themselves.
